Vision Impaired Youngsters Share Afternoon Tea With Furry Friends

Children living with sight loss shared a very special tea party with some furry friends, when they visited a unique café in Fakenham.

The vision impaired youngsters visited the town’s Cavies and Cake Café, where they were able to handle a number of very tame guinea pigs – as well as enjoying craft activities and an afternoon tea.

The event was part of sight loss charity Vision Norfolk’s programme of activities to support children and young people living with sight loss, and their families.

“Children and young people with vision impairments can face a variety of challenges, so opportunities like this are fantastic for their wellbeing, and of course, lots of fun too,” said Josh Bartholomew, children young people and families co-ordinator at Vision Norfolk.

“It was heart-warming and wonderful to see the joy on their faces as they interacted with and gently handled the guinea pigs as well as socialising with each other to build friendships. We’re incredibly grateful to Ian, Sarah and Rowan at Cavies and Cake for welcoming us into their wonderful café.”

In 2025 Vision Norfolk is marking 220 years of empowering people living with sight loss to live independent and fulfilled lives.

The charity’s Children, Young People and Families service supports children, young adults and their families at every stage of their sight loss journey.  It provides emotional and practical support, together with specialist information, advice, guidance and signposting to other relevant organisations, as well as an outreach service which can assist with paperwork and grant applications, and organise home visits to support families.

The service holds a variety of activities and events for those of pre-school age through to those transitioning into adulthood, with activities to suit their wants and needs.
